As a farmer's daughter and a native upstate New Yorker, I have seen the traditional family farm disappear. I have also seen a new type of farm appear; one that harnesses the sun and delivers real profit for family farmers and this is grass-fed farming.

There are millions upon millions of acres of unused pastureland in New York State alone and many producers (my father included) believe that we can raise grass-fed cattle far cheaper then our current feedlot method. Not only that, the product is good for the cow, the land, the farmer and our bodies.

The economic devastation that upstate New York has experienced is something that really gets me upset. I might be too idealistic but I feel that grass-fed farming and producing good quality produce could help to bring back upstate New York.

The focus of my writing, photography and advocacy are animals on pasture, rural culture and working landscapes. There is nothing more beautiful or natural than a cow on pasture and nothing more important than a farmer being paid a fair wage. A working farm has profound economic benefits and is essential to rural comminutes everywhere. I am proud to serve as a board member for the Center for Agricultural Development and Entrepreneurship, LLC.
